Galleria del Costume Bild 1

Galleria del Costume

Florenz (I) > Dauerausstellung

Dressing the body. Silhouettes and fashion (1550-2015) Bild 1

Dressing the body. Silhouettes and fashion (1550-2015)

Barcelona (ES) > Dauerausstellung

Since ancient times, human beings have altered the shape and appearance of their bodies by means of hairstyles, jewellery, tattoos and especially their clothes.
In every age, the different ways of dressing are intimately connected with moral, social and aesthetic codes. Fashion imposes standards of beauty; silhouettes and volumes are modified and nature gives way to artifice. Clothes change the body's proportions and alter the wearer's relationship with physical space and other people. The exhibition Dressing the Body sets out to show how clothes modify the appearance of the body by way of actions that have alternately tended to compress it and liberate it, from the sixteenth century to the present.

Von Samtbrokat und Häutchengold – Ausgewählte Paramente aus ... Bild 1

Art and Innovation: Traditional Arctic Footwear from the Bata Shoe Museum Collection

Toronto (CA) > seit 20.02.2016

At the top of the world, the Arctic spans over fourteen million square kilometers and includes eight countries. The challenging landscapes of this circumpolar expanse seem harsh and inhospitable, yet the region is home to over forty distinct culture groups who have thrived there for centuries, creating brilliantly beautiful and diverse solutions to meet these challenges. Among the most innovative is the footwear and clothing created by Arctic women whose ingenuity is reflected in the remarkable variety of garments made; a variety that reflects both environmental as well as cultural needs.
From innovative technologies deftly used to ensure survival and comfort to intricate, decorative techniques used to culturally ground wearers, the incredible range of circumpolar attire is a stunning testament to the art and technology of dress found in the Arctic.

Washington, DC (USA) > Dauerausstellung ab 24.09.2016

This exhibition explores the history of African Americans in theater, film, and television in order to celebrate their creative achievements, demonstrate their cultural impact and illuminate their struggles for equal representation on the stage of American entertainment. Visitors will see how African Americans transformed the ways they are represented onstage by challenging racial discrimination and stereotypes and striving to produce more positive, authentic and diverse images of African American identity and experience. Together these stories suggest how African American performing artists also paved the way for broader social change. Stories include Paul Robeson’s role in Othello, Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf and the Black Stuntmen’s Association in Hollywood.
