Fashion City How Jewish Londoners shaped global style

Step inside a traditional tailor’s workshop in the East End and immerse yourself in the glitz and glamour of a Carnaby Street boutique at the height of the Swinging Sixties – when London was the world's fashion capital. For the first time, this exhibition will uncover the major contribution of Jewish designers in making London an iconic fashion city. Discover the stories behind the Jewish fashion makers who became leaders in their industries, founded retail chains still on the high street today, and dressed the rich and famous – including David Bowie, Princess Diana and Mick Jagger. Learn about the contribution of key figures, such as renowned wedding dress designer Netty Spiegel, master milliner Otto Lucas, the epitome of British flamboyance Mr Fish, and living legend David Sassoon. Fashion City brings together places and spaces in London with fashion and textiles, oral histories, objects and photography to weave this fascinating history, where every stitch tells a truly unique story.

CHIC Vetments et Elegance 1800 - 1900

Chic! Von den Frous-frous des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zur Fast-Fashion des 21. Jahrhunderts lädt das Hébert-Museum mit zwei Ausstellungen zum Staunen und Hinterfragen der Mode ein: Kleidung und Eleganz und Denis Rouvre. Ursprünglich dazu gedacht, den Menschen vor Wind und Wetter zu schützen, wandelte sich die Kleidung im Laufe der Zeit. Sie wurde von einem Gebrauchsgegenstand zu einem dekorativen und attraktiven Kleidungsstück. Die Art und Weise, wie man sich kleidet, bezieht sich auf den Begriff der Mode, die dem Geschmack einer Epoche, einer Region oder einer sozialen Klasse entspricht. Kleidung ist auch Träger von Bedeutungen - Autorität, Macht, Beruf, Stand - und das Sprichwort "Kleider machen Leute" stellt die Realität dieser Äußerlichkeiten in Frage. Die üppige Mode des 19. Jahrhunderts spiegelt die Veränderungen einer Gesellschaft wider, die immer reicher und industrialisierter wird. Die Ausstellung Kleidung und Eleganz - 1800-1900 bietet in verschiedenen Räumen einen farbenfrohen Streifzug durch die Geschichte des Geschmacks und der Kleiderordnung der Bourgeoisie. Die kraftvollen fotografischen Porträts von Denis Rouvre, die einen zeitgenössischen Blick ermöglichen, zeigen eine beunruhigende ästhetische Übereinstimmung mit den Porträts, die Ernest Hébert (1817-1908) hundertfünfzig Jahre zuvor gemalt hatte. Diese Fotografien, die aus einer Begegnung mit der Emmaus-Gemeinschaft entstanden sind, hinterfragen unsere Konsumgewohnheiten und die subversive Kraft der Kleidung.

Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style

Explore the history of San Francisco through fashion. Featuring one of the most iconic collections of 20th- and 21st-century women’s clothing in the United States, this exhibition includes 100 collection highlights, along with local loans of high fashion and haute couture. The first major presentation of our costume collection in over 35 years, it showcases designs from French couturiers, Japanese avant-garde designers, and other pillars of the fashion industry, including Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, Christopher John Rogers, Comme des Garçons, and Rodarte. The designs on view, many never shown before, reflect San Francisco’s long-standing tradition of self-expression through fashion.
In San Francisco — a city with a vibrant history of embracing radical clothing styles — fashion mavericks have perennially supported boundary-pushing designers. These advocates include retailers, such as Susan Foslien, Sherri McMullen, or the Ospital family of Modern Appealing Clothing (MAC); individuals like Georgette “Dodie” Rosekrans, who famously financed John Galliano’s early collections; and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, which preserve designers’ legacies in their permanent collection. Today, the Museums’ collection boasts avant-garde creations by the Japanese fashion designers Rei Kawakubo, Kei Ninomiya, Junya Watanabe, and Yohji Yamamoto as well as European innovators like Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Alexander McQueen.

Otti Berger. Stoffe für die Architektur der Moderne Eine Installation von Judith Raum im temporary bauhaus-archiv

In den 1930er-Jahren entwarf die Textilgestalterin Otti Berger (1898–1944) Stoffe für die Architektur der Moderne, die bis heute faszinieren. Ihre Entwürfe verbinden Ästhetik, Funktion und technische Innovation auf beeindruckende Weise und veränderten grundlegend das Verständnis von dem, was Textilien sein und leisten können. Otti Berger hatte ab 1927 am Bauhaus studiert und gelehrt, ab 1932 machte sie sich in Berlin selbstständig. Sie arbeitete für Auftraggeber*innen europaweit und erwarb zahlreiche Patente. In Kooperation mit dem Bauhaus-Archiv hat die bildende Künstlerin Judith Raum gemeinsam mit der Weberin und Textildesignerin Katja Stelz die Stoffe von Otti Berger in einem mehrjährigen Rechercheprojekt analysiert. Der interdisziplinäre Forschungsprozess mündet nun in die reich illustrierte Publikation „Otti Berger. Stoffe für die Architektur der Moderne“, die Bergers Schaffen erstmals auf umfassende Weise zugänglich macht. Judith Raum nähert sich Bergers Werk, indem sie die Stoffe nach ihren Funktionen und Beziehungen zu den architektonischen Elementen Möbel, Fenster, Wand und Boden ordnet. Mit der Fotografin Uta Neumann entstanden für den Band neue Farbfotografien, welche die Schönheit und Raffinesse der Textilien auf bisher unbekannte Weise deutlich werden lassen. Die Ausstellung macht in der für das temporary bauhaus-archiv entwickelten Installation von Judith Raum Otti Bergers Werk sinnlich erlebbar. Zu sehen ist eine neue Videoarbeit neben zwei großformatigen, extra für die Ausstellung aufwendig von Katja Stelz nachgewebten Wandstoffen. Sie verweisen auf zentrale Aspekte im Leben von Otti Berger: ihr Bestreben um Patentschutz für ihre technisch herausragenden Gewebe sowie ihr berufliches und privates Schicksal als Jüdin während der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur.

Mode aus der MOMU Sammlung

Die Sammlungspräsentation im Erdgeschoss beleuchtet die belgische und internationale Avantgardemode anhand von Silhouetten, Bild- und Archivmaterial aus der über 38 000 Objekte umfassenden MoMu-Sammlung. Um einen größtmöglichen Teil der MoMu-Sammlung - von zeitgenössischer Mode bis hin zu historischer Kleidung, Textilien und Accessoires - zeigen zu können, wird die Sammlungspräsentation regelmäßig geändert. Durch die Sammlungspräsentation wird das MoMu fortan zu einem durchgehend geöffneten festen, dynamischen, überraschenden und inspirierenden Treffpunkt für jeden Besucher. Aufgrund des mangelnden Ausstellungsraums konnte die umfangreiche Museumssammlung in der Vergangenheit nicht immer in vollem Umfang gewürdigt werden. Heute kann das renovierte Museum der Geschichte der belgischen und internationalen Mode endlich einen festen Platz einräumen. Damit die Sammlungspräsentation auch in Zukunft ein dynamischer Ort voller Überraschungen ist und bleibt, wird die MoMu-Sammlung nicht nur kontinuierlich mit Kreationen von aufstrebenden Talenten ergänzt, sondern auch Lücken in der historischen Sammlung geschlossen. In der Sammlungspräsentation entdecken Besucher die Entwicklung der belgischen und internationalen Avantgardemode. Die Ausstellung zeigt Kleidung und Accessoires, sowie Einladungen zu Modeshows und Archivbilder. Ein einleitender Dokumentarfilm geht tiefer auf die Entstehung der Qualitätsmarke „Belgische Mode” seit dem Aufkommen der „Antwerp Six” in den 1980er Jahren ein. Sie unterstreicht auch die Bedeutung der Modeabteilung der Königlichen Akademie der Schönen Künste in Antwerpen mit den jährlich wechselnden Kreationen der Modestudenten.

Viktor & Rolf – Fashion Statements

Die Kunsthalle München zeigt die erste große Retrospektive des niederländischen Designerduos Viktor&Rolf in Deutschland. Mit atemberaubender Virtuosität loten Viktor Horsting und Rolf Snoeren seit über 30 Jahren immer wieder die Grenzen zwischen Couture und Kunst aus. Ihre Meisterwerke wurden von Künstler:innen wie Madonna, Tilda Swinton, Lady Gaga, Doja Cat und Cardi B getragen sowie in Ballettproduktionen und in einer Oper, unter Regie von Robert Wilson, in Szene gesetzt. Rund 100 der kühnsten Stücke des ebenso visionären wie leidenschaftlichen Duos werden nun in einer spektakulären Inszenierung erlebbar gemacht. Viele Kreationen sind zum ersten Mal ausgestellt – zusammen mit zahlreichen Videos, Skizzen und handgefertigten Porzellanpuppen, die mit den ikonischen Kreationen der Designer gekleidet sind, sowie mit Werken von renommierten Foto-Künstler:innen wie Andreas Gursky, Ellen von Unwerth oder Herb Ritts.

Weaving Abstraction in Ancient and Modern Art

The process of creating textiles has long been a springboard for artistic invention. In Weaving Abstraction in Ancient and Modern Art, two extraordinary bodies of work separated by at least 500 years are brought together to explore the striking connections between artists of the ancient Andes and those of the 20th century. The exhibition displays textiles by four distinguished modern practitioners—Anni Albers, Sheila Hicks, Lenore Tawney, and Olga de Amaral—alongside pieces by Andean artists from the first millennium BCE to the 16th century. Featuring more than 50 works, including major loans and new acquisitions, this cross-historical exhibition offers new insights into the emergence of abstract imagery. The constructive nature of weavings, arising from the grid formed by the vertical and horizontal elements of the loom, prompted the formal investigation of geometric designs that emphasize the integral relationship between structure and design in the textiles. Each of the four modern artists featured developed innovative approaches to an ancient medium through deep study of Andean techniques. Shown together, these ancient and modern weavings reposition the place of textiles in global art history.

Le 3 avril 2024, le musée des Arts décoratifs dévoile un nouvel accrochage des salles du parcours permanent dédiées au design contemporain, aux niveaux 5 à 9 du Pavillon de Marsan. Pour la première fois, cette présentation intègre une sélection de créations de mode et de bijoux : une trentaine de créations couture ou de prêt-à-porter et une cinquantaine d’accessoires et de bijoux qui entrent en résonance avec les chefs d’œuvre du design du XXe siècle jusqu’à nos jours. Dans ce contexte muséographique, récemment enrichi des salles accueillant la dation Lalanne et les nouvelles acquisitions du Cercle design, les créations de mode et les bijoux sélectionnés s’accordent aux pièces de design et d’artisanat, par affinités de formes ou de conception, ou selon des rapprochements chronologiques. Cette présentation rend particulièrement hommage aux couturiers et aux créateurs ayant récemment contribué par leurs dons à l’enrichissement des collections du musée. Retrouvez les créations de Balmain, Andrea Crews, Comme des Garçons, Schiaparelli, Issey Miyake, Xuly Bët, Fred Sathal, Elizabeth de Senneville, Valentino, Paco Rabanne, Christian Dior, Hermès, Lanvin, Louis Vuitton, Van Cleef and Arpels, Line Vautrin, Gilles Jonemann, Helmut Lang, Christian Astuguevieille, et bien d’autres.

Brassaï. L'occhio di Parigi

The exhibition, created in collaboration with Estate Brassaï and curated by Philippe Ribeyrolles, scholar and nephew of the great photographer, will present an in-depth and original approach to Brassaï’s oeuvre through over 200 vintage prints, with particular attention to the extremely famous images dedicated to the French capital and its life. Hungarian by birth, but Parisian by adoption, Brassaï was one of the protagonists of world photography, defined by his friend Henry Miller as “the living eye” of photography. Starting from 1924, he participated in the great cultural ferment that hit Paris in those years, experiencing a tight link to the surrealist movement and a close relationship with artists such as Picasso, Dalí and Matisse. His photographs dedicated to the life in the capital – from the working-class neighborhoods to the great symbolic monuments, from fashion to portraits of his artist friends, to graffiti and nightlife – are today iconic images that immediately identify the portray of Paris in the collective imagination.

De Nittis Painter of modern life

For the first time Palazzo Reale celebrates the talent of Giuseppe De Nittis in a monographic exhibition featuring around 90 paintings, both oils and pastels, coming from the main public and private collections, Italian and foreign, including the Musée d'Orsay and the Petit Palais of Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Reims and that of Dunkerke, the Uffizi of Florence – to name a few -, in addition to the extraordinary nucleus preserved at the GAM in Milan and a selection from the Pinacoteca of Barletta, named after the painter, which preserves an exceptional number of works following the bequest of the widow, Léontine De Nittis. The consecration of Giuseppe de Nittis as one of the great protagonists of nineteenth-century-European painting occurred thanks to the exhibition success he enjoyed after his passing, starting from the magnificent retrospective dedicated to him in 1914 at the 11. Venice Biennale. Other fundamental stages were the exhibition Giuseppe De Nittis. La modernité élégante set up in Paris at the Petit Palais in 2010-2011, and in 2013 the fundamental monographic dedicated to him in Padua at Palazzo Zabarella. DE NITTIS. Painter of modern life aims to enhance the international stature of a painter who was, together with Boldini, the greatest of the Italians in Paris, where he managed to stand in comparison with Manet, Degas and the Impressionists. With the latter, the young Peppino was able to share, despite the diversity of pictorial language, the aspiration to revolutionize the very idea of painting, once and for all dismantling the hierarchy of genres to achieve that autonomy of art which has been the greatest aspiration of modernity.
