DIOR - A New Look

In the autumn of 2024, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Netherlands, will present an exhibition about Christian Dior, founder of one of the world’s greatest fashion and couture houses, and his unique legacy. This retrospective – entitled DIOR – A New Look – was initiated and conceived by the Kunstmuseum and is therefore distinct from previous exhibitions staged abroad. “It will focus on Dior’s design and explore the House’s unique essence, developed during the period 1947-1957, when Monsieur Dior himself was at the helm. His successors have always respected this DNA, conveyed through themes like the New Look, the love of flowers, heroines and strong women, and the Dior Dream, which form the backbone of the exhibition”, explains fashion curator Madelief Hohé.

The Kunstmuseum Den Haag is also launching a dialogue between the vision of the founding-couturier, Christian Dior, and the current Creative Director of Dior women’s collections, Maria Grazia Chiuri. “Her work is given a central role in this exhibition which truly reflects the idea of a New Look, a 'new vision'",” Madelief Hohé points out. It will also present pieces of costume jewellery, a selection of fashion drawings, iconic images and a focus on women who were important to Christian Dior, as well as those who are important to Maria Grazia Chiuri. The Creative Director is indeed committed to designing for the modern woman, works with female artists and has an eye for the way they see things. The exhibition at the Kunstmuseum not only pays attention to Dior’s famous customers but also to the women who work so hard behind the scenes. These emphases ensure a fresh new look at Dior.

DIOR – A New Look will feature designs from the collection of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, augmented by exceptional loans from Dior Héritage, but also from Palais Galliera (Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris), and public and private collections in Belgium, Germany, Monaco and the United States. The exhibition will be accompanied by a Dutch-language catalogue and a children’s art book about the young Christian Dior.

Mothers, mother figures, mentors and family ties are intimately intertwined with fashion history. Many designers reach back to the style of their mother's day, but mum ’s themselves are also a big source of inspiration: from mum jeans to mini-mes, the mum style is a flourishing branch of modern fashion. Symbolic fashion mothers, such as Jeanne Lanvin, Madeleine Vionnet and Sonia Rykiel, made an artistic mark on the creations of their contemporaries and are still influencing present-day designers. Historically, clothing concealed the changing bodies of expectant mothers. From 1900 onward, however, there was a growing appreciation of the cultural identity of mothers, both in fashion and in society. In 20th and 21st century fashion, this culminated in a veritable celebration of mothers and mother figures. From the Blessed Virgin, to contemporary fashion experiments that debunk stereotypes, to the testimonies of non-binary parents, surrogacy parents and adoptive parents, from Christian Dior's New Look to the designs of Jacquemus and the regal women who carry of South African Thebe Magugu: the mother figure as a source of inspiration and creativity in fashion is back from... never having left?

Polaroids

Das Polaroid-Verfahren hat die Fotografie revolutioniert. Wer diese Kamera jemals benutzt hat, wird den Geruch der Entwicklungsemulsion und die Faszination für das Sofortbild nicht vergessen. Auch Helmut Newton liebte es, mit der Polaroid-Kamera zu fotografieren. Er hat die Technik seit den 1970er Jahren intensiv genutzt, insbesondere während der Shootings für seine Modeaufträge. Dahinter stand, wie er es selbst einmal in einem Interview nannte, das ungeduldige Verlangen, sofort wissen zu wollen, wie die Situation als Bild aussieht. Ein Polaroid entspricht in diesem Zusammenhang einer Ideenskizze und dient zugleich der Überprüfung der konkreten Lichtsituation und Bildkomposition. Gleichzeitig übten die Polaroid-Aufnahmen insbesondere aufgrund ihrer Objekthaftigkeit und der Möglichkeit, das Bild experimentell weiterzuverwenden, einen großen Reiz auf viele künstlerisch arbeitende Fotografen aus. Und so werden die Polaroids von Helmut Newton durch die Werke zahlreicher Kolleg*innen ergänzt, beispielsweise von Robert Mapplethorpe, Mary Ellen Mark, David Hockney, Ulay, Carlo Mollino, Luigi Ghirri, Maurizio Galimberti und Hannah Villiger. Diese Gruppenausstellung vereint die unterschiedlich verwendeten Techniken des Polaroid-Verfahrens in den verschiedensten Formaten, jeweils als Werkgruppe der ausgewählten Fotograf*innen.

L’intime, de la chambre aux réseaux sociaux. Du XVIIIe siècle à nos jours

L’intimité est-elle aujourd’hui menacée ou au contraire devenue tyrannique au détriment de la sphère publique ? Que nous disent les objets de notre quotidien sur notre rapport à l’intime et la manière dont il a évolué depuis le XIXe siècle? Présenté dans la nef du musée, « Vie privée. mode d’emploi. Le design de l’intime » s’inscrit dans une nouvelle programmation réitérative d’expositions d’arts décoratifs et design mettant l’accent sur une approche sociologique. Il s’agit d’une réflexion originale sur la manière dont les objets reflètent les modes de vies et les évolutions de la société. Le premier thème choisi est celui du rapport à l’intime et de ses transformations au cours des siècles. Chambre, lits, fauteuils et canapés, paravents, coiffeuses, bourdaloues, chaises percées, baignoires, sex-toys, objets connectés et applications peuplent cette exposition qui explore divers thèmes liés à l’intimité : le sommeil, l’érotisme, la sexualité, la beauté, la toilette, la façon d’être ensemble, la promiscuité ou le désir d’isolement. Les aspects contemporains de l’intimité sont également explorés, comme ceux engendrés par les réseaux sociaux, les nouvelles technologies de surveillance ou encore par les situations de précarité. Des artisans, des artistes et de grands designers des XVIIIe au XXIe siècles sont convoqués à travers ce récit de l’intime, de Gustave Caillebotte à Pierre Bonnard, d’Adolf Loos aux frères Bouroullec, d’Eileen Gray à Gaetano Pesce, en passant par Superstudio et Archizoom.

Excess in Elegance. Dawid Tomaszewski: A Decade and a Half

Anlässlich der umfassenden Schenkung des polnisch-deutschen Modedesigners Dawid Tomaszewski zeigt das Kunstgewerbemuseum Entwürfe des Designers aus den letzten 15 Jahren. Der in Berlin ansässige Modedesigner gründete nach Stationen bei Sonia Rykiel in Paris und Comme des Garçons in Tokio 2009 sein eigenes Label. Von Beginn an bewegte er sich mit seinen Kreationen an der Schnittstelle zwischen Couture und Kommerz. Während er für den Laufsteg aufwendig gearbeitete Couturestücke designt, bedient er mit seinen Kollektionen für QVC ein breites Publikum. Diese Zweigleisigkeit ermöglicht es ihm, seiner Fantasie in den Couture-Entwürfen freien Lauf zu lassen. Ergebnisse davon sind mit Kristallen bestickte Kleider und Hosenanzüge, ausgefallen drapierte Abendkleider und außergewöhnliche Materialmixe. Die Ausstellung nähert sich anhand der Kollektionen, Entwürfen, Accessoires, Zeichnungen und Fotografien dem Menschen und Modedesigner Dawid Tomaszewski und zeigt dabei eine Designgeschichte made in Berlin.

Berlin, Berlin. 20 Jahre Helmut Newton Stiftung

Die Gruppenausstellung zum 20-jährigen Jubiläum der Helmut Newton Stiftung präsentiert Werke von Helmut Newton, Yva, Jewgeni Chaldej, Hein Gorny, Arwed Messmer / Fritz Tiedemann, Will McBride, Arno Fischer, Arwed Messmer / Annett Gröschner, Wim Wenders Stiftung, F.C. Gundlach, Günter Zint, Maria Sewcz, Michael Schmidt, Thomas Florschuetz, Ulrich Wüst, Barbara Klemm, Harf Zimmermann im Museum für Fotografie. Zugleich ist es eine Hommage an Newtons Geburtsstadt. Im Herbst 2003 hatte sich der Fotograf entschieden, Teile seines Archivs nach Berlin zu überführen, nachdem er die nach ihm benannte Stiftung gegründet hatte, die im ehemaligen Landwehrkasino am Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten untergebracht und im Juni 2004 eröffnet wurde. Von jenem Bahnhof verließ Helmut Neustädter, als Jude ständig von der Deportation bedroht, Anfang Dezember 1938 überstürzt Berlin und kehrte 65 Jahre später als weltberühmter Fotograf Helmut Newton zurück. Seitdem bespielt die Helmut Newton Stiftung gemeinsam mit der Kunstbibliothek das historische Gebäude unter dem Namen „Museum für Fotografie“. Nach dem Tod von June Newton (alias Alice Springs) im April 2021 ist das Gesamtwerk von Helmut Newton und Alice Springs sowie alle Archivalien im Stiftungsarchiv untergebracht.

Barbie®: The Exhibition

Opening to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the Barbie brand in 2024, the exhibition will map the Barbie legacy that started in 1959 when Ruth Handler wanted to craft a different narrative for her daughter, Barbara. It will explore the story of Barbie through a design lens, including fashion, architecture, furniture and vehicle design. Through a new partnership with Mattel Inc., we have been granted special access to the extensive Barbie archives in California, and dozens of rare and unique items will go on show alongside other key loans and acquisitions to tell the story of the iconic brand over the past six-and-a-half decades.

Shirley Craven

An exhibition of vivid, colour-filled textiles by post-war designer Shirley Craven. Born in Hull in 1934 and evacuated during the Second World War, Craven cites the rural Yorkshire landscape and her post-war education at Hull College of Art and the Royal College of Art (1955-8) as a launchpad to a hugely successful career at the printing firm Hull Traders. Aged 29, Craven became Chief Designer and Director of this small and visionary firm whose artist-designers also included Althea McNish and Eduardo Paolozzi. The Whitworth is home to over 80 of Craven's bold abstract textiles, displayed together for the first time in over 60 years alongside newly acquired unique works from her days as a Student at the RCA. Alongside exhibitions, the Whitworth offers a broad programme of civic engagement and education activities, events and workshops that are informed by and support our communities. In 2024, we will launch Everyday Art School, a new suite of civic engagement and collections spaces that provides new experiences in our richly diverse and accessible constituent-led programme.

Mode aus der MOMU Sammlung

Die Sammlungspräsentation im Erdgeschoss beleuchtet die belgische und internationale Avantgardemode anhand von Silhouetten, Bild- und Archivmaterial aus der über 38 000 Objekte umfassenden MoMu-Sammlung. Um einen größtmöglichen Teil der MoMu-Sammlung - von zeitgenössischer Mode bis hin zu historischer Kleidung, Textilien und Accessoires - zeigen zu können, wird die Sammlungspräsentation regelmäßig geändert. Durch die Sammlungspräsentation wird das MoMu fortan zu einem durchgehend geöffneten festen, dynamischen, überraschenden und inspirierenden Treffpunkt für jeden Besucher. Aufgrund des mangelnden Ausstellungsraums konnte die umfangreiche Museumssammlung in der Vergangenheit nicht immer in vollem Umfang gewürdigt werden. Heute kann das renovierte Museum der Geschichte der belgischen und internationalen Mode endlich einen festen Platz einräumen. Damit die Sammlungspräsentation auch in Zukunft ein dynamischer Ort voller Überraschungen ist und bleibt, wird die MoMu-Sammlung nicht nur kontinuierlich mit Kreationen von aufstrebenden Talenten ergänzt, sondern auch Lücken in der historischen Sammlung geschlossen. In der Sammlungspräsentation entdecken Besucher die Entwicklung der belgischen und internationalen Avantgardemode. Die Ausstellung zeigt Kleidung und Accessoires, sowie Einladungen zu Modeshows und Archivbilder. Ein einleitender Dokumentarfilm geht tiefer auf die Entstehung der Qualitätsmarke „Belgische Mode” seit dem Aufkommen der „Antwerp Six” in den 1980er Jahren ein. Sie unterstreicht auch die Bedeutung der Modeabteilung der Königlichen Akademie der Schönen Künste in Antwerpen mit den jährlich wechselnden Kreationen der Modestudenten.
