Rococo Reboot! Fashion 1750 - 183

Eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century fashion inevitably evokes images of lavish ball gowns in macaron colors, extravagant jewelry, and towering hairstyles adorned with feathers. But does this cinematic image align with historical reality? Rococo Reboot! answers this question and takes you on a fascinating journey through fashion from 1750 to 1830. Through a thematic journey, the exhibition reveals the role of fashion in daily life. Did you know that dressing was a ritual, from lacing a corset to carefully arranging bows and ribbons? That clothing not only served as a status symbol but also contributed to hygiene? Or that city fashion was an entire universe, with specialized luxury boutiques and a love for strolling in parks and salons? This exhibition offers a critical reinterpretation of the Rococo era and its fashion history. Rococo Reboot! breaks through common stereotypes and shows that fashion history is not a series of neatly defined periods but a continuous evolution in which styles and trends are constantly being reinvented. With contemporary insights and sensory experiences, you will discover how fashion from this period continues to influence today.

40 + years of STIJL

An intimate look at four decades of Belgian fashion history. We are in the Dansaert district of Brussels. It is the 1980s. The forerunners of Belgian fashion are opening stores here. Sonja Noël is the first. For 40 years, through her STIJL boutique, Sonja has been translating contemporary Belgian fashion into everyday fashion wear. By supporting new brands and young designers, STIJL has played a part in writing the story of fashion in the city, the region and throughout the country. 40 + years of STIJL is more than just the story of a boutique. Both inspired and inspirational, the central role of this woman is revealed through 68 silhouettes created by 46 designers. It highlights the link she created between designers and customers, between high fashion and people’s everyday lives, between a boutique and a whole neighbourhood. At first glance, the story of STIJL is not particularly different from that of any other fashion boutique. What sets it apart, though, is its unique selection of designers. STIJL is the place where collections move from the conceptualised and image-based world of fashion to the experience of everyday life. Like the boutique itself, the exhibition 40+ years of STIJL highlights the work of designers. The exhibition is not arranged in chronological order. It is structured around STIJL’s values. Threads of Time – Fashion and Style 1870–1940

Dunkers Kulturhus is showing for the first time a larger number of dresses from Helsingborg Museum's collection. The majority have never been exhibited before. The selection consists of dresses, accessories and outerwear from the 1870s to the 1940s. With texts by fashion historian Tonie Lewenhaupt, among others, the visitor is guided through the exhibition from Victorian tournament fashion to fashion inspired by film stars in the 1930s. The history of clothing is part of a story about a place in change and shows how a small provincial town abandons its small-town attire in favor of dressing like a continental metropolis. What the dresses had in common was that they were part of a culture where seeing and being seen was highly valued. In the new city, environments were created for the dressed-up to be seen in, where the city theater's premieres, the concerts in the fountain parks and the art openings were important occasions.

Weiße Kleider. Die Ausstellungswerkstatt im Herrenhaus Cromford

Die Ausstellungswerkstatt „Weiße Kleider“ im neuen Ausstellungsraum des Herrenhauses der Textilfabrik Cromford zeigt Damenmode aus der Zeit zwischen 1770 und den 1850er Jahren. Nach historischen Vorlagen aus dem Rokoko, dem Empire und dem Biedermeier verdeutlichen die sieben nachgeschneiderten Modelle die Zusammenhänge zwischen Mode, Frauenbild und Gesellschaft. Die präsentierten Kleider sind alle weiß und lenken somit den Fokus auf die Linie: die schmale Taille, das tiefe Dekolleté, der ausgestellte Rock. Kein buntes oder extravagantes Muster verstellt den Blick auf die Form. Den schlichten einfarbigen Kleidern sind an der Wand historische Einordnungen und Querverweise gegenübergestellt. Diese informieren über Form, Farbigkeit und Materialität der historischen Kleider und ordnen sie so in einen gesellschaftlichen Kontext ein. Museumspädagogische Elemente laden zudem zur spielerischen Auseinandersetzung mit verschiedenen Körperformen ein.

Air France, a history of elegance

Behind Beauty. Hinter den Kulissen der Schönheitsindustrie

Mode und Accessoires, Kosmetik und Düfte aber auch Chirurgie, Sport und Ernährung – all das und noch viel mehr ist Teil der Schönheitsindustrie, die weltweit für mehr 500 Milliarden US-Dollar Umsatz im Einzelhandel sorgt. Doch wo kommen die Trends her? Wer bestimmt, was „Schönheit“ ist und wie Mann oder Frau sie erreichen können? Mit vielen interaktiven Ausstellungseinheiten präsentiert das LWL-Museum Textilwerk auf über 600 m² auch die Rolle der Werbung und der Medien sowie den Einfluss von Social Media. Das Spektrum der rund 800 Exponate reicht von Kleidern und formender Wäsche über Lockenwickler, Rasierer, Lippenstifte und Utensilien aus dem Fitnessstudio bis hin zu denen der Schönheitschirurgie wie Spritzen und Brustimplantate. Höhepunkte sind unter anderem Kleid und Krone der ersten und einzigen deutschen Miss Universe Marlene Schmidt (1961) sowie ein Yves Saint Laurent-Kostüm von Marlene Dietrich aus den 1970er Jahren. Videointerviews mit Protagonisten und Protagonistinnen der Branche, darunter ein Schönheitschirurg, die Chefin einer Kosmetikfirma, die Betreiberin einer Modelagentur und ein Curve-Model, geben Einblicke in verschiedene Geschäftsfelder. Viele Mitmachstationen, Spiegel, ein Laufsteg und eine Selfie-Station laden dazu ein, sich mit der eigenen Einstellung zum Thema Schönheit zu beschäftigen.

Suit Yourself | 100 years of menswear, 1750-1850

The intimate spotlight exhibition Suit Yourself presents the exuberant finery worn by flamboyant Dutch men in the 18th and 19th centuries, made with striped velvet, floral embroidery and rich silk fabrics. Men’s fashions in the 18th century were by no means understated, and the influence of the ‘macaroni’ from 1760 to 1780 soon caught on in the Netherlands. Worn mostly by wealthy men, the style was all about vivid colours and contrasting fabrics. Clothing also reflected the beauty ideal of that era: a blue waistcoat decorated with intricate embroidery, for example, incorporates a cardboard band that accentuates the length of the torso. The Dutch creators and wearers of these fashion items drew their influences from near and far. Heavy silk damask fabrics were woven and worn locally, while inspiration also came from Turkish motifs and other international sources. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) imported exclusive fabrics such as silk, cotton and linen to the Netherlands, through a process that often involved violence and oppression. The French Revolution (1789–1799) led to more subdued fashions, as soldiers in uniform became the models of masculinity. Relatively subtle displays of wealth remained visible in the detailing, however, with items such as waistcoats featuring double rows of buttons. In the 19th century, styles were further influenced by industrialisation, which increased the availability of fabrics and ready-to-wear clothing. This period also saw a flourishing market for second-hand fashions. One exceptional example of this recycling phenomenon is a waistcoat made of hand-painted Chinese silk from an 18th-century dress.

Mode aus der MOMU Sammlung

Die Sammlungspräsentation im Erdgeschoss beleuchtet die belgische und internationale Avantgardemode anhand von Silhouetten, Bild- und Archivmaterial aus der über 38 000 Objekte umfassenden MoMu-Sammlung. Um einen größtmöglichen Teil der MoMu-Sammlung - von zeitgenössischer Mode bis hin zu historischer Kleidung, Textilien und Accessoires - zeigen zu können, wird die Sammlungspräsentation regelmäßig geändert. Durch die Sammlungspräsentation wird das MoMu fortan zu einem durchgehend geöffneten festen, dynamischen, überraschenden und inspirierenden Treffpunkt für jeden Besucher. Aufgrund des mangelnden Ausstellungsraums konnte die umfangreiche Museumssammlung in der Vergangenheit nicht immer in vollem Umfang gewürdigt werden. Heute kann das renovierte Museum der Geschichte der belgischen und internationalen Mode endlich einen festen Platz einräumen. Damit die Sammlungspräsentation auch in Zukunft ein dynamischer Ort voller Überraschungen ist und bleibt, wird die MoMu-Sammlung nicht nur kontinuierlich mit Kreationen von aufstrebenden Talenten ergänzt, sondern auch Lücken in der historischen Sammlung geschlossen. In der Sammlungspräsentation entdecken Besucher die Entwicklung der belgischen und internationalen Avantgardemode. Die Ausstellung zeigt Kleidung und Accessoires, sowie Einladungen zu Modeshows und Archivbilder. Ein einleitender Dokumentarfilm geht tiefer auf die Entstehung der Qualitätsmarke „Belgische Mode” seit dem Aufkommen der „Antwerp Six” in den 1980er Jahren ein. Sie unterstreicht auch die Bedeutung der Modeabteilung der Königlichen Akademie der Schönen Künste in Antwerpen mit den jährlich wechselnden Kreationen der Modestudenten.
