The Art of Transformation

On stage, anything is possible! Through the illusions made by the actors and the audience’s imaginations, time and space are transformed: an ordinary woman becomes a supernatural being, and decorative buttons turn into gems. In this exhibition, you can see original props and costumes used in historical plays by well-known writers such as Ludvig Holberg and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. Original stage design models from productions of Ibsen and Shakespeare plays demonstrate how scenography has changed over time. Discover treasures from our collection of costumes and stage design models, spanning from 18th century Christiania through interwar Paris and up to our own time.

Costumed balls Dressing up history, 1870-1927

A century and a half ago, the costumed balls and extravagant skating carnivals were the pinnacle of worldly entertainment and staged a kaleidoscopic fantasy suit. However, behind their anachronistic exuberance, these balls reinforced the founding myths of the Empire's colonial destiny and future. This exhibition captures the splendour of the entertainments where each one and everyone transformed, for the time of an evening, into a fanciful character inspired by history. She gives an extraordinary account of these lavish events through some of the most striking objects in the museum's collections. It is rare that, in the same exhibition space, so many 19th century clothes designed for ephemeral use, as well as the photographs of the people who put them on, can be admired. Similarly, it is rare to see captured by photographers of the time the humor and eccentricity of those who participated in these grandiose evenings, the lightness then often being absent from public performances. The invitation to reinvent oneself in an alter ego, inspired by history or fantasy, represented a unique opportunity requiring research, expense and a visit to the photographic studio. The exhibition examines in depth the objects that preserve the memory of these historical balls, making astute digital use to unveil the secrets for the great pleasure of the contemporary public. More than 40 dazzling clothes, but also photographs of the costume people and memorabilia publications restore the pomp of these prestigious events. This exhibition and the accompanying book are the culmination of a research project of unusual scope based on the wealth and strengths of the McCord Stewart Museum’s collections. These made astonishing discoveries now revealed to the public for the first time.

Future Observatory: Tomorrow’s Wardrobe

omorrow's Wardrobe brings together a diversity of designers from across the fashion industry who are revolutionising the way we create, make, and wear clothes – including Stella McCartney, Ponda, Ahluwalia, Salomon, Ranra, Phoebe English and Vivobarefoot. The fashion and textile industry is one of the most environmentally damaging design fields at work today. The footprint of our wardrobes extends from textile production in farms and factories to the design process in fashion houses. Though a significant driver of the UK economy, the impact of fashion is felt across the world in the form of material waste, ecological degradation, water pollution, exploitative working conditions and overproduction: annual garment production has doubled since 2000 and is expected to have increased by 60% in 2030. Tomorrow’s Wardrobe showcases the urgent research and innovation taking place across the UK to rethink how the world of fashion works. Moving from fabric landscapes to design studios to individual garments, the display presents a future built from both high-tech and low-tech tools: sewing machines, robotic arms, artificial intelligence, digital ids, upcycling, recycling and more. Tomorrow’s Wardrobe is curated by Future Observatory, the Design Museum’s national research programme for the green transition. Future Observatory is coordinated by the Design Museum in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The display has been supported by curatorial advisors Kate Goldsworthy (UAL), Jalaj Hora (Nike) and Susan Postlethwaite (Manchester Metropolitan University).

Immer dabei: DIE TASCHE

Sie ist Transportmittel, nützlicher Begleiter oder als Statussymbol ein Objekt der Begierde. Es gibt sie in unzähligen Ausführungen und für die verschiedensten Anlässe – sei es zum Einkaufen, für die Arbeit, den Sport, zum Reisen oder als Abendbegleiter. Kein anderer Gegenstand ist, sobald wir das Haus verlassen, stets zur Hand und trägt alles, was wir unterwegs benötigen: DIE TASCHE. In einer vielseitigen Ausstellung taucht das Deutsche Ledermuseum in die Kulturgeschichte der Tasche als weltweit verwendeter Gebrauchsgegenstand, Modeartikel und Luxusgut ein. Über 200 Exponate aus drei Jahrtausenden vom altägyptischen Lederbeutel, über mittelalterliche Gürteltaschen, erste Reisetaschen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert bis zu praktischen Rucksäcken, eleganten Handtaschen sowie einer Einkaufstüte aus biologisch abbaubarem Plastik erzählen ab dem 12. Oktober 2024 in der Ausstellung immer dabei: DIE TASCHE von einem der ältesten und vielseitigsten Accessoires der Menschheit.

Ist Mode politisch? Raum „Mode“ in der Berlin Ausstellung BERLIN GLOBAL im Humboldtforum

Our Colonial Inheritance

In the exhibition 'Our Colonial Inheritance', we look at the Dutch colonial history and presence, in Indonesia, Suriname, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and many other countries. You will not get to see and hear the 'known' history, there is more to see and learn. The exhibition shows how colonialism shaped the world of today, and how people endured colonialism. Learn how people tried to create their own lives, rebelled and remained in charge. Are you open to a multivoiced perspective?

Les dessous chics ou la mode intime (1919-1939)

Parure intime et discrète, la lingerie suit les tendances de la mode et participe à la libération du corps féminin. De l’abandon du corset à l’apparition de la gaine, l’invention du soutien-gorge et du bas qui souligne la jambe, la lingerie est affaire de mode. Elle est le premier habit dont on se vêt, celui que l’on dissimule ou qu’on laisse entrevoir, et qui, en toute intimité, met en valeur la silhouette. Catalogues de marques, revues spécialisées, publicités, et même reportages photographiques des vitrines de lingerie : à travers ces documents, les dessous de la mode s’exposent à la bibliothèque.

Rico Puhlmann. Fashion Photography 50s - 90s

Rico Puhlmann (1934 - 1996) zählte international zu den renommiertesten Modefotograf*innen und prägte über die letzten vier Dekaden des 20. Jahrhunderts das Modebild seiner Zeit. Die Ausstellung würdigt Puhlmanns Werdegang und insbesondere seine zeichnerische und fotografische Arbeit für Modejournale der 1950er- bis in die 1990er-Jahre. Dabei nimmt sie verschiedene Aspekte der Mode-, Fotografie-, Presse- und Kulturgeschichte in den Blick. Die Ausstellung bietet einen umfassenden Einblick in das zeichnerische und fotografische Schaffen Rico Puhlmanns, der über 40 Jahre, erst als Illustrator und dann als Modefotograf, für bedeutende Magazine wie „Brigitte“, „petra“, „Constanze“ oder international „Vogue“, „Harper’s Bazaar“, „Glamour“ oder „GQ“ arbeitete. Die gefragtesten Fotomodels ihrer Zeit standen vor seiner Kamera: Gloria Friedrich und Gitta Schilling, Cheryl Tiegs und Jerry Hall, Cindy Crawford und Naomi Campbell. Seine Fotos erschienen auf zahlreichen Magazincovern, seine Bildstrecken auf Hochglanzpapier füllten mehrere Doppelseiten in Folge. Das Gros der Exponate stammt aus dem umfangreichen Nachlass Rico Puhlmanns, das von seinem Bruder Klaus Puhlmann und dessen Frau Anne Puhlmann verwaltet und für die Ausstellung großzügig zur Verfügung gestellt wird.

Mode aus der MOMU Sammlung

Die Sammlungspräsentation im Erdgeschoss beleuchtet die belgische und internationale Avantgardemode anhand von Silhouetten, Bild- und Archivmaterial aus der über 38 000 Objekte umfassenden MoMu-Sammlung. Um einen größtmöglichen Teil der MoMu-Sammlung - von zeitgenössischer Mode bis hin zu historischer Kleidung, Textilien und Accessoires - zeigen zu können, wird die Sammlungspräsentation regelmäßig geändert. Durch die Sammlungspräsentation wird das MoMu fortan zu einem durchgehend geöffneten festen, dynamischen, überraschenden und inspirierenden Treffpunkt für jeden Besucher. Aufgrund des mangelnden Ausstellungsraums konnte die umfangreiche Museumssammlung in der Vergangenheit nicht immer in vollem Umfang gewürdigt werden. Heute kann das renovierte Museum der Geschichte der belgischen und internationalen Mode endlich einen festen Platz einräumen. Damit die Sammlungspräsentation auch in Zukunft ein dynamischer Ort voller Überraschungen ist und bleibt, wird die MoMu-Sammlung nicht nur kontinuierlich mit Kreationen von aufstrebenden Talenten ergänzt, sondern auch Lücken in der historischen Sammlung geschlossen. In der Sammlungspräsentation entdecken Besucher die Entwicklung der belgischen und internationalen Avantgardemode. Die Ausstellung zeigt Kleidung und Accessoires, sowie Einladungen zu Modeshows und Archivbilder. Ein einleitender Dokumentarfilm geht tiefer auf die Entstehung der Qualitätsmarke „Belgische Mode” seit dem Aufkommen der „Antwerp Six” in den 1980er Jahren ein. Sie unterstreicht auch die Bedeutung der Modeabteilung der Königlichen Akademie der Schönen Künste in Antwerpen mit den jährlich wechselnden Kreationen der Modestudenten.

Folk Dress - Festive Dress and Workwear

The independent farmer had an important position in pre-industrial society in Norway. This led to a strong focus on rural culture in the construction of a Norwegian identity toward the end of the 19th century.

Folk Dress
“Folk dress” describes clothing worn by rural people for everyday work, for churchgoing and for other special occasions. Clothes could be distinctive for the region or more generally influenced by urban and European fashion. Regional folk dress could also change over time, partly inspired by international fashion as well as a result of local innovation. Local variations in dress increased noticeably during the 19th century. In some areas, traditional folk dress was in use far into the second half of the 20th century. While fashion is usually categorized chronologically, folk dress has often been sorted according to region. The earliest portrait of a Norwegian farmer and his family (1699) shows a Renaissance influence on rural clothing. Although the portrait comes from the Hallingdal region, the clothing strongly resembles dress used at same time in other areas in southern Norway.

Bunad
Bunads are clothes with historical elements used today only for festive occasions. In some areas, there was a seamless transition from traditional folk dress. In other areas bunads adopted elements from folk dress, such as embroidery, but changed the shape and cut of the garments. Some bunads have been designed in the course of the last century, often with little or no real historical connection. There are approximately 500 different types of bunads in production today. More than 60% of Norwegian women own a bunad.The type of silver worn with traditional folk dress is still used as a part of modern bunads. As a consequence, Norway has a strong living tradition of filigree silver jewelry.

Sami Dress
Traditional Samí clothing is neither characterized as folk dress nor as bunad. An unbroken tradition exists in Samí culture and, even though Samí dress is constantly changing, some medieval traits remain. Samí dress shows great regional variety, largely following dialect boundaries.Today, a vibrant creativity is expressed both in contemporary Samí fashion and jewelry design. Simultaneously, there is a dynamic use of traditional clothing. Many Samí also combine traditional elements with modern garments, to show identity and belonging.
